Can Broccoli Help Control Asthma Symptoms?

It is amazing how common vegetables, easily obtainable at the grocery, can have surprising health and medicinal properties. Here is a sample – broccoli vs. asthma.

Just two cups of steamed broccoli may be all you need to control asthma symptoms. Researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia found that natural nutrients found in the vegetable, specifically sulforaphane, help protect against respiratory inflammation that can cause the health issue.

“Laboratory tests have shown that consumption of broccoli changes the formation of the airway and may make clear breathing easier for those who suffer from asthma and allergies,” said lead study author and honours student Nadia Mazarakis. “Blockages in the airway were reversed almost entirely.”

Furthermore, researchers also found that broccoli could work as an alternative treatment for some asthmatics who might not respond to traditional treatments.

“In Australia, asthma affects one in ten people and it’s something that is on the rise,” said University of Melbourne honours student Nadia Mazarakis, who undertook research on the topic with supervisor Dr Tom Karagiannis, via the Daily Mail.

Other powerful vegetables–including brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale and cauliflower–all carry essential health benefits that could even reduce or reverse lung damage.

A high fiber diet can help out with many health issues. Eating foods that are rich in vitamin A, C and K as well as calcium and iorn can help reduce the risk of other other medical problems, as well.
